A boxed plate brought out in 1997 for the 25th anniversary of Botanic Garden, featuring the Dog Rose as the design. This plate is in a satin lined presentation box. 25th Anniversary of Botanic Garden 1997 was a landmark year for Portmeirion, in that it was the 25th year that they had produced their incredibly popular Botanic Garden range. During that period, 1972-1997 it was estimated that they had produced approximately 25 million items! As Susan Williams-Ellis's most famous pattern, she decided to celebrate the anniversary by producing various limited edition commemorative ceramic souvenirs for their loyal customers. These included: a miniature china teaset, a silver hinged one-cup teapot, a shadow box framed containing miniature teaset pieces, a book, a limited edition print painted by Susan's daughter Angharad Menna and a superb jardiniere comprising of a large plant pot and stand. As the demand for these special items was bigger than expected a few more items were produced such as a gilded matle clock, espresso cups, a teacup, saucer and side plate combination, a mug, a canton vase and a jug. All the items bear selected patterns from the Botanic Garden range, including some non-standard or retired motifs. Botanic Garden So impressed was Susan with the floral transfers made for her Mother's Day Plate in 1971, she decided to start collecting antique drawings and illustrations of plants, butterflies and insects with which she could decorate a new range of pottery. Susan called the design Botanic Garden and in 1972 produced it on a new shape of ware called Drum, which was based on the Meridian shape. The African Daisy was the first of many flowers to be incorporated into the range where different flower motifs appeared on each piece. Botanic Garden was, and now after over 40 years still is, one of the world's most successful pottery designs and forms half of Portmeirion's turnover. It really is a timeless and beautiful design. The now iconic, green leaf pattern that forms the border on the range, became part of Portmeirion's company logo and now appears on all of their products.
