All the details
Full set of 12 "Children of the World" plates, which were originally sold to benefit Unicef, the United Nations Children's Fund. In 1978, as part of the International Year of the Child celebration, Heinrich (Villeroy & Boch) started issue of a series of plates showing children of different cultures. By Heinrich, Germany, Villeroy & Boch. UNESCO proclaimed 1979 as the International Year of the Child. The proclamation was signed on January 1, 1979 by United Nations Secretary General Kurt Waldheim. A follow-up to the 1959 Declaration of the Rights of the Child, the proclamation was intended to draw attention to problems that affected children throughout the world, including malnutrition and lack of access to education. Many of these efforts resulted in the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. A joy to own...the perfect gift, an heirloom to cherish. You will be proud to add these Unicef Collectors Plates to those important family possessions that are both valuable and meaningful. Each plate is a magnificent work of art. The warmth and sensitivity of artist Karin Blume radiates from the pure white porcelain background that serves as the illustration's canvas. The plates themselves were crafted by Hienrich, one of the world's most prestigious names in valuable colletions. Each plate is a rare investment...in real vallue as a family possession and included, when I bought then new, a contribution to Unicef in terms of help and hope. A beautiful idea was imported from Europe. A world leader in the art of creating porcelain collectibles designed a series of colletor plates dedicated to the children of the world with significant proceeds going to Unicef. As a result of the sales of the plates not only in Europe more than one million dollars was quickly raised and presented to Unicef. These funds brought new hope and life to children in the four corners of the world. At times these dollars meant survival. Often they created self-help programs. In all cases these funds brought at least a touch of joy to mothers and children who previously knew little other than despair.
