HMRC sees one job as your main income. Assuming you are receiving PAYE your tax code for this will be 1060L meaning you get a £10,600 personal allowance - the amount you earn before you pay any tax. If you have a second (or third) income this will be added on top of your main income. If your main income is over £10,600 a year then there won’t be a personal allowance on any additional income. It may look like you're get taxed more on the additional income but if you added that income to your 'main' income then you should pay exactly the same amount of tax overall as if you had one job. By default HMRC will usually put you on the emergency tax band where they see a second PAYE income. If your income from both your jobs adds up to LESS than your personal allowance (or if you only cross the personal allowance threshold as a result of the additional income) then you could end up paying too much tax as a result. If this is the case, you can ask HMRC to divide your allowance between your jobs, or ask for a refund at the end of the tax year. You’ll need to send copies of P60s from your jobs to do this or you could try ask them to fix the issue sooner by sending copies of your wage slips as proof of your regular monthly/weekly income. Essentially sometimes you have to tell HMRC how many jobs you are doing and what your income is. They don't have the manpower to audit everyone all the time so it is easy to get caught out sometimes.
